Ko te orokohanga o te ingoa Oro Nuku, nō ngā kupu Māori e rua nei; Oro – he mea e tōiriiri ana, he hou mārakerake ana rānei; me te kupu Nuku – nā, i roto i te horopaki o te rōpū nei, e hāngai pū ana ki a Papatūānuku.  Heoi anō, he hiahia nō te rōpū nei, he wāhine te nuinga o ōnā mema, kia tū hai reo mārakerake, kia tuku tirohanga Māori hoki mō ngā kaupapa hauora pāpori me te hauora Māori.  

The name Oro Nuku originates from two Māori words; Oro – to ‘resonate’ or ‘to have a clear sound’ and Nuku which in the context of this group, refers to the female Māori god Papatūānuku. Thus, it is the intention of this group, made up mainly of women, to provide a clear, informed Māori voice and perspective to issues related to public and Māori health.
